I work at the intersection of oral health, education, and systems thinking.

Long before I had the language for it, I was drawn to structures that formed slowly, held their shape over time, and revealed their history in layers.

My work explores how health behaviours develop within wider systems, including clinical practice, education, and the environments that shape how we define and pursue health.

Many professional systems experience ongoing reform yet persistent tension, a pattern I describe as refinement without relief.

Curiosity has been the common thread throughout my career.

My professional life began in the Royal Air Force, where I served for over two decades in a range of dental roles across the UK and internationally. That experience shaped both my clinical foundation and my appreciation for the systems within which healthcare operates.

After leaving the RAF, I continued working in clinical practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist while gradually moving into teaching, research, and professional education.

Over time, my focus widened from improving individual clinical outcomes to exploring the wider forces that shape how health behaviours emerge in the first place.

Clinical Practice & Education

My clinical background remains central to how I think about health.

Working directly with patients highlights the complexity of behaviour change and the many influences that shape health decisions. These experiences eventually led me into education, where I began teaching clinicians and contributing to curriculum development and postgraduate supervision.

I later completed a Masters in Medical Education at the University of Bedfordshire, focusing my research on social presence in synchronous online learning environments and how community and interaction influence learning outcomes.

Education continues to be an important part of my work, both through teaching and through collaborative projects supporting professional development in oral healthcare.

Systems Thinking

Alongside my clinical and educational work, I studied Earth and Environmental Science with the Open University.

That experience profoundly influenced how I understand complex systems. Ecological systems operate across time, responding to pressures, incentives, and feedback loops. Increasingly, I began to see similar patterns within healthcare and professional education.

Health behaviours are rarely the result of individual choice alone. They emerge within wider environments shaped by institutions, incentives, and cultural expectations.

Exploring these connections has gradually become a central theme of my writing, teaching, and public speaking.

Speaking & Writing

SpeakingOHC2021

Today my work sits at the intersection of clinical practice, behaviour change, and systems thinking.

Through speaking, writing, and professional education I explore questions such as:

• how environments shape health behaviour
• how institutions influence professional practice
• how education adapts within changing systems
• how long-term thinking can inform better health outcomes

My aim is not simply to provide answers, but to create space for thoughtful discussion around complex health challenges.

Available for keynote lectures, professional workshops, and invited talks.

Beyond Work

Outside of professional life I remain a lifelong student of the natural world.

Time spent walking in woodland, studying landscapes, or observing ecological systems continues to shape how I think about scale, adaptation, and responsibility.

These experiences reinforce a simple idea that increasingly informs my work:

Health, like nature, exists within systems.

Understanding those systems may help us make wiser decisions within them.
