I was reflecting on why I always feel so at home when I visit Boston, MA & I guess it's one of the most English of the US cities from the people to the countryside and buildings.
Unfortunately this time it was a quick visit to assist in the development of the US Straumann Team with regards to the implementation of Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). Fortunately I still had time to meet some great folk.
Half of the time was dedicated to theoretical Teaching & Learning & trying to walk the balance of speaking & listening. I always feel I have failed if I am speaking for more than 50% of the time. It is my personal challenge to ensure I adhere to my educational philosophy and facilitate learning in a student centred approach. Its as though I have the great Carl Rogers sitting on my shoulders constantly reminding me to stop talking & start listening. Sometimes it can be an easy ask but other times its as though everything conspires against this 'mantra', from the expectation of participants to the facilities and general layout. On this occasion feedback was excellent, "hands down my team said you brought it altogether for them" Tracey Anderson Butler RDH, MFT. Thank you Tracey.
Here's the thing, I felt it could have been so much better as I definitely broke my 50:50 rule and spoke more than listened. So what did I learn? Even if time conspires against you, less is still probably more.
The second half was dedicated to hands-on education. We all know that this is where the learning really happens when best practice is facilitated.
I was lucky as a local dental office loaned their facilities and some really helpful staff to us. Anyone living in the Bedford, MA area, you have a great practice on your doorstep called Emerson Dental: https://www.emerson-dental.com
Thank you to Dr Kwon, Pegi and Carrie for their great help and patience.
I really loved the aquariums in the waiting area and clinics. What a great idea to encourage patients to relax by watching tropical fish before & during treatments. An excellent de-stressor....
... and there's a Wholefoods next-door. What's not to like?
Thanks to EMS & Straumann for the invite.
